Each incoming student to Mount Airy Christian Academy is tested in order to determine the best possible placement. Listed below are the criteria used to determine a child’s readiness for kindergarten.
Kindergarten Age Requirements
Children entering kindergarten must be five years of age on or before September 1 of the year in which they enter school. Exceptions to this entrance age may be made at the discretion of the Head of School.
COGNITIVE READINESS
- Recognizes name in print
- Writes first name in mixed case letters
- Knows full name, parents’ names, address, and phone number
- Recognizes no less than half of the capital letters and some lower case letters
- Recognizes numerals 0-10
- Counts serially to 20
- Identifies the 8 basic colors
- Identifies 4 basic shapes
- Draws a developmentally appropriate person
- Speech is understandable
- Can retell, in order a simple story
- Can rhyme simple words
- Can complete an “AB” pattern
GROSS AND FINE MOTOR SKILLS
- Throws a ball with moderate accuracy
- Hops on one foot 2 or more times
- Claps a given pattern
- Cuts paper on both straight and curved lines using scissors
- Strings beads
- Copies letters with moderate accuracy
SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL GROWTH
- Follows two-step instructions
- Responds agreeably to adults’ instructions
- Separates easily from parents
- Answers basic questions appropriately
- Demonstrates respect for adults
- Demonstrates interest in learning about God and His Word
- Interacts well with peers
