Kindergarten Readiness Skills
Each incoming student to Mount Airy Christian Academy is tested in order to determine the best possible placement. Listed below are the criteria used to determine a child’s readiness for kindergarten.
Kindergarten Age Requirements
Children entering kindergarten must be five years of age on or before September 1 of the year in which they enter school. Exceptions to this entrance age may be made at the discretion of the Head of School.
Students must demonstrate proficiency in the following skills prior to beginning Kindergarten:
COGNITIVE READINESS
- Recognizes name in print
- Writes first name in mixed case letters
- Knows full name and parents’ names
- Recognizes capital letters, lowercase letters and sounds
- Recognizes numerals 0-10
- Counts serially to 20
- Identifies the 8 basic colors
- Identifies 8 basic shapes
- Draws a developmentally appropriate person
- Speech is understandable
- Can answer basic questions about a simple story
- Can rhyme simple words
- Can complete an “AB” and “ABC” pattern
- Can count with 1:1 correspondence
GROSS AND FINE MOTOR SKILLS
- Throws a ball with moderate accuracy
- Hops on one foot 2 or more times
- Claps a given pattern
- Can trace both straight and curved lines
- Cuts paper on both straight and curved lines using scissors.
- Strings beads
SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL GROWTH
- Follows two-step instructions
- Responds agreeably to adults’ instructions
- Separates easily from parents
- Answers basic questions appropriately
- Interacts well with peers
