This year, the Mount Airy Christian Academy Boys’ Soccer team had the opportunity to compete at the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) tournament in Dayton, Tennessee. Twenty-five teams from around the country came to compete over the 3 day tournament. It was an exciting atmosphere and a quality tournament to finish the season.
On Wednesday, November 28th, the Lions began their tournament with group play on a very wet, foggy day. MACA won their pool with a win and a draw, which guaranteed them a spot in Division 1 for the very first time in school history. Goals were scored by Matt Holly, Cristian, Gomez, Judge Russell, and Estiven Saldarriaga.
Thursday, November 29th began bracket play as MACA went up against the #1 seed in Division 1. After an extremely hard and well played game in which the Lions hit the goal post on 3 occasions, MACA fell to the eventual tournament champions, 1-0.
Later that afternoon, the MACA boys showed their character by regrouping and squeezing out a tough 1-0 victory on a late goal by Estiven Saldarriaga, marking the school’s first ever Division 1 victory along with the shutout.
Friday, November 30th was the final day of the tournament and the Lions had the chance to end their tournament and 2015 season with a second win in Division 1. With goals from Estiven Saldarriaga and Judge Russell, the team took that opportunity and won their match 2-1, becoming NACA Division 1 consolation champions.
The team finished the tournament with a record of 3-1-1, placing them 5th out of 25 teams in the competition. It was an excellent way for MACA to end an incredible season! We praise the Lord for the privilege to compete in the tournament, and we thank Him for the opportunity to use soccer as a way of bringing glory to the name of Christ! Go Lions!
