MACA Student Among Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program
The Academic Dean, Dr. Lori A. Sefton, of Mount Airy Christian Academy (MACA) announced today that Benjamin Hickey has been named a Commended Student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from MACA and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the national program, was presented by Mrs. Vicky Webster, Interim Head of School.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students placed among the top three percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) nationwide last year.
“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesman for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
During an Awards Assembly in front of the entire MACA student body and faculty, Sefton presented Hickey with his Letter and congratulated him on his accomplishment. “We are extremely proud of Ben and the part MACA has played in his preparation for this test as well as for college and beyond. His great success is, in part, our success, and we are thrilled for the opportunity to recognize and celebrate it with him,” announced Sefton.
Several of Hickey’s family members were in attendance at the Assembly as well as Hickey’s younger sister, Grace, who is a freshman at MACA.
