The Next MACA Star Teacher Spends Her Day In The Library!
MACA’s LEAD team has chosen the newest Star Teacher from a unique “classroom” – the MACA Library. Pam van Hemert, MACA Librarian and elementary enrichment teacher, has been a member of the MACA family for four years as the school Librarian. Each year, she has a tremendous impact on the success of MACA students by building a passion for reading in her students. Through the Accelerated Reader program, van Hemert determines the personal reading level of each elementary student and sets appropriate reading goals for them for each quarter and for the year. “She is really in tune to the needs of students and teachers,” praised Megan Harmon, elementary LEAD teacher. “She knows the books that each student enjoys to read and provides prizes which motivate students to reach their reading goal.” Students also enjoy coming to van Hemert’s library enrichment periods where they hear great stories, learn how to use the library coding system, and take AR quizzes toward their reading goal. To ensure the library continues to have the newest resources possible, van Hemert also organizes and runs the Scholastic Book Fair each year. Students enjoy this chance to find new and exciting books and the proceeds serve to provide the means for ordering even more items to help the library continue to grow.
Van Hemert doesn’t just run the library and support MACA’s elementary reading program. She also manages the curriculum for the entire campus including researching available textbooks, overseeing ordering and delivery of materials, and providing the correct curriculum to each MACA student, from kindergarten to senior year. “All our textbooks are ready when our kids arrive,” stated Susan Woolverton, MS LEAD teacher. With van Hemert’s help, students have the chance to make a great start to each year and each teacher knows he will have the materials he needs to support learning in the classroom.
When a staff member has a need for special materials for his class, van Hemert does the work to locate and secure the items to meet the need. “Anytime I need a resource for my class, she knows what is available and helps to obtain what I need,” said Patrick Korn, Secondary Principal. There truly isn’t a person at MACA that doesn’t depend on van Hemert and her expertise.
Van Hemert also assists the campus in pre-school and the Before/After Care program, “even when she doesn’t want to,” laughed Harmon. Her willingness to help out wherever she is needed and to do so with a smile and a hug for each child make her a huge part of MACA’s success. “She is a good friend to our staff, our families, and especially our children,” shared Lori Sefton, Academic Dean. Pam van Hemert is simply one of a kind and we are so glad she is ours! Congratulations to one of MACA’s brightest stars!
