It was a pleasure to watch the National Honor Society students be so enthusiastic about service.  After collecting the donations, sorting through the donations and then loading and unloading them, they were still smiling and happy to be helping others. “Being able to see the smiles on the faces of the people who helped offload the bags of clothing was so rewarding. When you witness the thankfulness of people in need, it makes all the work you put into the project totally worth it,” said Junior Hannah Weiland.  Junior Matthew Braden added,  “But I think we were more excited about giving and donating than anything else. We were completely content with driving for a half an hour just to spend five minutes emptying the car.”  Thank you again for your participation in this event and we look forward to future service opportunities.

Our students offer undivided attention to one of our world-renown chapel speakers that visit weekly.

Mount Airy Christian Academy Senior, Heather McCorkel has signed an NCAA Division 1 National Letter of Intent to swim for the Liberty University Flames.

With the official signing having already taken place in accordance with NCAA rules, a commemorative ceremony to celebrate Heather’s outstanding achievement was held on Tuesday, December 18 at Mount Airy Christian Academy.  Heather’s parents, Don and Lynn McCorkel, MACA Administration, and the Class of 2013 were in attendance.

Athletic Director, Matt Brethauer, stated, “We are blessed to have the honor to celebrate with Heather and her family on this outstanding achievement that has come about due to hard work, dedication, focus and commitment.  We would like to congratulate Heather McCorkel on being the first Student-Athlete in MACA History to receive an NCAA Division 1 Scholarship.”

Speaking of Heather’s academic achievements, MACA Registrar, Debbie Patrick, said, “Heather McCorkel is a student who is driven to excel in all areas of her life.  Not only is she a superb and dedicated swimmer, she is also an excellent student.  Heather currently holds a 3.84 GPA and has consistently earned A or A/B Honor Roll each quarter during her middle and high school career . . .  Heather has acquired more than the standard community service hours for graduation, which reveals her heart to serve people.”

MACA Administrator, Vicky Webster, closed the ceremony with congratulatory remarks and prayer.

Admission Policies

Mount Airy Christian Academy (MACA)
admits students of any race, color, nationality, and ethnic origin to all the
rights, privileges, programs, and activities made available to students of the
school. MACA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality, or
ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions
policies, or any other school-administered programs. It does reserve the right
to admit only those students whose educational needs can be met by the school.

MACA does not require a student or his
parents to be Christians or members of a church. Parents must, however, sign a
pledge to support the school’s teachings.

Children entering kindergarten must be
five years of age on or before September 1 of the term in which they enter
school. Exceptions to this entrance age may be made at the discretion of the
Administrator.

Admission Requirements

1. 
   MACA offers an online
   application process. On our website, www.macamd.org, select “Admissions,”
   and then create an account. Follow the directions to create a new student
   application. Once you have submitted the application, you will be able to
   track your admissions status online by logging into your account.
2. 
   Families new to MACA
   must request their family pastor, if they have one, to complete a Pastoral
   Reference Form. The form can be downloaded from our website or can be
   requested from the office. Please have your pastor mail the reference
   directly to the school.
3. 
   All students entering
   K-12 grade shall be given an assessment to determine readiness for that
   grade. Please call the office to schedule a testing session. Elementary
   placement tests seek to determine the grade level on which the applicant is
   reading and to discover the competency of a variety of math skills. The
   secondary entrance exam consists of portions of the mathematics and language
   sections of the Stanford Achievement Test and a short essay question. Scores
   from an equivalent current standardized test may be accepted at the
   discretion of the Secondary Principal.
4. 
   Parents must submit
   records from the student’s previous school, including the final report card,
   SAT scores, and any diagnostic testing, such as IEP/504 plans. These records
   must show passing grades and acceptable conduct at the previous school. Any
   pertinent information that is withheld may result in the student’s expulsion
   from the school.
5. 
   Secondary students
   (grades 6-12) must schedule and attend an interview with the Secondary
   Principal.

Upon completion of all the admission
requirements, the Principal will make the decision regarding admission. When a
student is admitted to MACA, an acceptance letter will be sent to his parents.
This letter will include information to assist with school preparations.

Should a student not be admitted to
MACA, the parents will receive a phone call as well as a letter to include
one-half of the registration fee. An appeal of an admission decision may be made
to the Administrator who will present the appeal to the School Board. All
decisions by the School Board are final.

Probation

Each student who is accepted into MACA
is on a two-month probation. At the end of this time period, if there is any
question as to the suitability of the student as a member of the school, a
parent/teacher/student conference will be held to determine what steps, if any,
should be taken to remedy the situation. A student who is dismissed may or may
not be allowed to re-enroll at the school, depending on the reason for
dismissal. The parents of a student who is dismissed will be responsible for
tuition and fees for that month. If it is determined that a student is not going
to meet the expectations of MACA, he may be asked to leave at any time.

Transfer

Students may transfer in at any time
up to their senior year and graduate from MACA. Students may transfer in at the
beginning of either semester of the school year. The school must be provided
with evaluations, a portfolio, or some similar means of evaluating student
placement. SAT tests in mathematics and English, standard for all students
entering MACA, will be administered unless the current year’s scores are
available. Secondary students attempting to transfer in during the second
semester will be at the discretion of the Administrator. Students who have not
attended MACA/HS for three years are not eligible to be valedictorian or
salutatorian.

College Visit at MACA

Want to learn more about Pensacola Christian College?  There will be a representative here on Monday, December 10 from 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM.  He will be located in the education wing lobby.  Students will need to sign up with Mrs. Patrick in order to have permission to miss part of class.

VFW Essay Winners – MACA In-House Competition

Each year MACA participates in the Veterans of Foreign Wars essay competitions.  We do this in order to develop appreciation for the men and women who serve in our military.  We send entries for the Patriot’s Pen competition (grades 6-8) and the Voice of Democracy competition (grades 9-12).  Congratulations to our MACA in-house winners!

These students will be competing against other public, private, and home school students at the district level.  Winners are usually announced at the end of November.

MACA High School Internships

Information letters, program overviews, and student evaluation forms were sent to internship hosts this week.  If your host did not receive his information, please let Mrs. Patrick know as soon as possible.  Students should review the Journal Guidelines before their internship begins as there are questions they will need to ask their host.

LOST AND FOUND

Items left in the lost and found will be displayed for parents to look at on conference day. Any items not claimed before Thanksgiving will be donated.

Please pray for High School Internships November 5-9.  Please pray that our students will be a good testimony to the businesses that they work with and that this will be a beneficial experience in helping our students get a feel for the career that God has for them.

Invite your grandparents to join us for Grandparents Day, November 20.  We would love to have them.

Please be mindful to leave the assigned handicapped spots in front of the building for those who require them and have handicapped tags.

SENIOR CLASS NEWS

The Senior Class hopes to see you at MACA tomorrow, October 27 from 11-3PM for a Family Fall Festival and Silent Auction. Come and enjoy games, hayrides, food, scarecrow making, and more. Some of the items up for auction include a spotting scope, restaurant coupons, round of golf, as well as a party at Pump It Up. This event will be held rain or shine. Enjoy a day of fun while supporting the senior class.

Many thanks to the parents who came and celebrated fall with the students at our harvest parties today.  The fall colors and the beauty of God’s creation have been glorious this year.  Harvest is such a fun time.  I hope that your family will consider visiting the fall festival tomorrow.  It’s a win win for everyone as you get to have fall fun – and our seniors get to raise money for their missions trip in March.  Please refer to the enclosed flier for more details.

Next week will be special as our classes will be ready to offer class tours and presentations for their part of our unit:  YOUR VOTE COUNTS.  We want you to be able to come and view your child’s class presentation, so we have set up times just for families to come in.  We ask that parents choose these family times only, and allow for the other elementary students to tour in the middle of the day.
